The Franco authorities ordered the abolition of entries in Basque from the cemetery of Amorebieta and the placement of those in Spanish. They had to remove the stones written in Euskera so that their owners were not punished. The policies against the Basques and Euskera that came from previous centuries were taken to the extreme by the Francoists until the language of public life almost disappeared.
