16 August 1804,
The popular uprising known as Zamakolada begins in and around Bilbao. In exchange for the construction of the port proposed by the juntero Simón Bernardo Zamakola, the implementation of compulsory military service was approved in the Assembly of Gernika. Understood as a decision against the outbreaks, in which the Basques did not have to go to the Spanish Army, and in disagreement, hundreds of citizens stung their weapons. Several junters and junctions were taken until the extraordinary General Meetings were convened and the agreement was rejected. The people gave him these verses.
Simon Zamacola, a very
