Winnipeg arrives in Chile with 2,200 refugees from the Spanish Republic. The trip was organized by poet Pablo Neruda, named Spanish immigration consul. Winnipeg Poullac left the French people on 4 August. Chilean President Pedro Aguirre Cerda welcomed them in Valparaiso and showed solidarity with all exiles. A group of Basques aboard formed a choir during the trip.
