16 December 1972,
The Portuguese army committed a massacre against civilians in Mozambique. Accused of helping guerrillas FRELIMO, which were fighting colonialism, they entered Wiriyamu and transferred the entire population to the plaza. After applauding everyone and forcing them to sing “goodbye”, they started shooting and killing about 400 citizens.
When the massacre began to reach Europe, the Portuguese military said that the guerrillas committed the murder and that it was false. Interviewed by witnesses of the massacre and former members of the Portuguese army, journalist Felícia Cabrita revealed several years later the crime of the army in the Portuguese weekly Expresso.
