25 April 1974,
In Portugal, the Carnation Revolution began. It was a military uprising driven by left-wing movements against dictatorship, which, with the protection of the citizens, restored democracy and allowed the independence of the Portuguese colonies. The sign of the uprising was to place the song Grândola Vila Morena on Radio Renascença.
The dictatorship of over 50 years was unable to defend its power and collapsed within 24 hours. Women were given the same rights as men and were able to vote for the first time. All political prisoners were also released immediately.
