La Baja Navarra was invaded by the Spanish army. With the almost total dominance of Alta Navarra, they were especially cruel in Baja Navarra. They attacked the villages they found along the way: They burned Roncesvalles and destroyed the monastery, burned Ainhize-Monjolose, Garriz and Huarte, raped women and looted houses all around. Spanish bishop Bernardo de Mesa said textually that they had permission to destroy and plunder everything they wanted, that the Navarros were heretical.
