The mathematician Maurice Audin was tortured by the French military in Algiers. He was a member of the Communist Party of Algeria and an anti-colonialist activist for the independence of Algeria. He was arrested and tortured by the French parachutists during the Battle of Algiers.
Currently, the university and a plaza are named in the capital.
