Jesús Mari Leizaola, president of the Exile Government, returned to Euskal Herria. He landed in Sondika after closing the Basque Government delegation in Paris and dissolving the cabinet.
The exile of the Basque Government began with the occupation of Bilbao by Francoist troops in 1936. II. During the World War, Lehendakari Aguirre was missing for fifteen months because the Nazis wanted to stop him. After visiting the Basque exiles from several countries, he managed to reach South America, where they settled first in New York and then in Paris. When Aguirre died, he was named lehendakari Leizaola. On his return, they paid tribute to San Mamés.
According to Lehendakari Leizaola, “with today’s arrival in the Basque Country I fulfill and end my task. I call on the Basques for reconciliation and peace. This objective has mobilized my gestures and activities over the past ten years.”
