In India, at the Bhopal chemical plant, there was one of the most serious accidents in the world at night. Due to lack of safety measures, the highly toxic compound methyl isocyanate gas expanded into the air where half a million people lived. According to the Government, 5,295 people died and 4,902 were disabled for life. The victims reported 22,917 deaths, 508,432 permanent disabilities and 33,781 serious injuries. The US company Union Carbide did not take care of the damage caused to thousands of citizens in the area.
