21 May 1937,
Havana left the port of Santurtzi with 3,840 Basque children under 15 who fled the war. Along with them came teachers, female volunteers, doctors and priests. The United Kingdom Government agreed to receive children, but, following the decision not to intervene in the conflict, it stated that they would not make money for child support. Many of these children never returned. In 2002 the Basque Children of 37’ UK association for memory preservation was established.
