06 December 2008,
The Greek police murdered Alexandros Grigoropulos, 15, in the Athenian district of Exharquia. This neighborhood is known for the strong organization of the anarchist movement. Although police reported that a number of young people had thrown Molotov cocktails and were accidentally killed, witnesses reported that there was no violence and that the agent shot the youth directly as a result of a discussion.
There were major disturbances in the coming weeks and the general strike was closely monitored. The protesters occupied redactions from various media outlets and entered public television news in silence, but with the following message: “Stop looking and get everybody out on the street.”
Numerous analysts pointed out that behind the riots lies the lack of hope of many young people who were using crime to make their disagreements or requests visible.
