05 June 1199,
The Castilians began the siege of Vitoria. The vitorians endured nine months until January 25. At the time of King Sancho VII, the Spanish army was campaigning to conquer the western territory of the Kingdom of Navarra. During the attack, the lieutenant of the villa (regent) or castlemen was Martín Chipia. The Basques stood firm and it was a massacre. The Navarros had to surrender because of the impossibility of food and water entering. In January 1200, the Spanish army controlled Araba and Gipuzkoa in their entirety.
