18 December 2008,
Members of the Association of Sasoia Retirees were willing to go to prison to replace severely ill prisoners. The president of the Spanish government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and the president of France, Nicolás Sarkozy, were sent letters in which he was responsible for the situation of the 14 Basque prisoners with serious and incurable diseases. They argued that it was a dehumanized treatment, in which both the penitentiary center and the transportation between them further impaired their health. They expressed their readiness for sick prisoners to serve their sentences for themselves. They did not accept the proposal.
