Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska. The oil tanker Exxon Valdez sank into a reef and released 40.9 million liters of hydrocarbons into the sea, expanding 2,000 kilometers offshore.
Although they continue to investigate the long-term ecological damage, the accident resulted in the short-term death of some 250,000 seabirds, among many others.
