08 September 1813,
The siege of San Sebastian ended with the rebirth of the fortified French in Urgull. With the intention of expelling the French, the English and Portuguese Spanish allies committed a massacre in the city a week earlier: they stole everything they found in the city and raped or killed almost all Donostian women of all ages, while the French went up Mount Urgull and took refuge in their castle. More than 1,600 people died on August 31 and burned the city. The words of Spanish General Castaños are documented for not fighting the opaque French occupation of the Donostiarras.
