Cochise, the Chiricahua chief of the Apaches, dies. His name in apache was Shi-Kha-She, and it means "The Force of Oak." A group of apaches stole a settler's cattle and accused him of kidnapping his son. His attempt to stop him was useless, causing the Apatxe wars. For a decade he faced Mexicans and White Americans. After his death he became Geronimo leader.
