The newspaper El Spectador reported the sinking of the boat Leopoldina Rosa, from Baiona to Uruguay. Three hundred Basques traveled to Montevideo and 230 died.
Between 1837 and 1840, 40,000 Basques emigrated to America entering Uruguay, many for political reasons – the Carlist War had just ended in Hego Euskal Herria, in Iparralde the desertion of the French army was very strong.
