During these days, an Israeli soldier is bombarding hospitals, schools, Palestinian refugee camps with drones as if it were a video game, while in the West we see on the news screens the chapter of the table as a series. That is why it is so important that in other ways the harsh reality is discovered in order to be aware of genocide, impunity and geopolitics, at least. A simple detail of Adania Shibli in 2017 can be the right one for this. The editorial Igela has just published the work with the translation of Aitor Blanco. Because literature gathers it from reality and literature gives it to reality.
This short novel consists of two parts. The first is an Israeli officer who is in a camp where southern Palestine is colonizing in 1949. On an expedition they find a young Bedouin and capture her, rape her and kill her. In the second part, the protagonist is a young woman, 36 years old. The day he turns 25, he will read in the press an article about her and be curious. You will make a trip to get more information.
In the first part, the style is descriptive, narrates the facts, uses the third person to guarantee the distance. In the second part, however, the narrator speaks to us from the first person, to tell us the emotions that he has felt throughout the journey. Spiders appear, a spur to fear. The dog’s bark is the only cry of resistance. The character will take care of the sunburn and dust that followed the bombings.
“The situation here has been like this for a long time, to such an extent that today there are few people who remember the small details of the life before all this.” It has been 50 years since the second report and the situation has not changed for good in Palestine. Three generations have suffered occupation and war to date, newborns are dying of cold, children are starving and vehicles such as UN, Press or Ambulance have also been affected.
On these pages we can learn more about living in a situation of colonization, sharing a gum with the narrator on the road movie between the desert and the sea.
