Tennessee (United States), 1820. The slave Nathan Green is born, known as Nearest Uncle or Nearest Uncle. We do not know exactly when he was born and, in general, we have very little data about him until 1863, when he achieved emancipation. We know that in the late 1850s Dan Call was working on the preacher and distiller's whiskey distillery, and that Jack Daniel began studying there at the age of seven. Daniel had not learned to distil himself from the hand of his master, and slave Nathan Green taught him to make whiskey.
The whisky factory Jack Daniel's was founded in 1866, if you look at the label of the famous whisky. However, some experts believe that Jack Daniel was too young – he was about 16 years old – and that the year the company was founded was around 1875. Date, Daniel bought the Calli factory and named Nathan Green, already a free man, master distiller; he was the first black to get that title.

Until recently, we have not heard of Uncle Nearest's contribution. In 2016, writer and entrepreneur Fawn Weaver started a long research on Green, with the collaboration of over 20 historians, archiveros, archaeologists and genealogists. He discovered, among other things, that seven generations of the Green family have worked in the distillery Jack Daniel's and that there are still heirs of Nearest Uncle in the factory. But the main conclusion of the study is that Nathan Green invented the whisky formula Jack Daniel's.
Since then, Green has received a confession that he has denied for a long time and created a whisky brand that bears his name. But surely the most popular whisky in the world has the name of a white man, and not the name of a real creator.
