Perhaps one of the weaknesses of human beings is the tendency we have to listen to and care for the majority. It has certainly been an important feature of the development of our species and necessary for survival. But with digitalization, that characteristic that we have makes us more vulnerable.
These days, the results of the presidential elections in Romania, involving thousands of people, have been denied. They have accused Russia of having been able to influence the leadership of a whole people through TikTok by promoting a campaign of disinformation on that platform. That the power of democracies is subject to those who have the power to influence platforms.
Living in a reality in which human beings are so viable entails other reflections: What steps should we take to protect ourselves and our peoples from that natural tendency to follow the majority? Perhaps the best way is to educate in critical thinking, as it is necessary to understand and influence how our reality works. But at the same time, human beings should internalize the desire to permanently review the technologies that have such an influence on our social evolution.
For Romania, I assume that this situation is very disappointing, as its sovereignty is in the midst of the conflict between two different powers. Meanwhile, a third party, the Chinese platform TikTok, in this case, will continue to create opportunities to play with power, on the road to becoming richer and stronger.
