In the era of negationism, the manosphere and trolls, the contribution of literature is essential, because it is an exceptional instrument to look at the folds of reality: the situations of oppression that surround us, which we often do not perceive by some privileges, make us visible. And that is, among other things, what the latest collection of stories by Uxue Alberdi offers us: to make visible some mechanisms that the heteropatriarchate has naturalized in daily life.
The hetero word comes from the Greek and means another, different and different word. It is an abbreviation of the word heterosexual, but along with normative desire the ‘normal’ identity is also questioned; dynamics of the relationship between man and woman arise from different angles (couples, first affective sexual experiences, parentality and family, militancy, the world of work, loss…).
Of the eight stories, I recognize it, the one that has influenced me the most has been the third. In my head, I love this island, by Paul Milanes, and since I read the stories it has caused me a little whirlwind in my chest. I have become too familiar with the situation described and the public complaint made through this story has surprised me – and I liked it –. The case of oppressors.
Together with the topics and approaches addressed, the flexibility and vitality of language, the experimentation with the structure and the ambition of two or three phrases (dialects, Castellanisms, metaphors, dialogues, anti-retrocesses, notes, 1990s, children’s world, long-distance relationships…) are the strengths of this work.
Writing and reading feed each other and playing with it is possible on these pages. For example, I, as a reader, when reading the first short story, came to mind Katilina from Amelie Nothomb, and I have put the two papers into dialogue; or, as a writer, Alberdi, the protagonist of the fifth story, wears some of his readings to recognize sources of inspiration.
So, back to the topic, what is hetero-love? “Fury wake up and surround you at once,” or what else? Or “did he turn away from the forced smile and hooked his mouth even on the gum?” Sometimes it's also surrender. Or not.
