The survival of the Basque country is not the only problem that the Basques play in the political game, but rather, as a more characteristic element of Euskaldunisation, the one that most reflects our situation. It shows very well what does not appear so much in other areas. Firstly, how far has the assimilation of the Basque Country (or Spanish/French, which is the same) reached, and to continue, how do we position ourselves in relation to the conflict it is suffering from.
The situation in the Basque Country is not good, as can be seen in many aspects of the language. In many places it is lost, or is being lost, as we are seeing painfully in the French occupied territories. It is also losing strength in the places where Basque is spoken, and the pollution of the main languages of the environment is excessive, so much so that it seems that the Basque language is no longer a language, but a kind of morse. Then, there is a detail that often goes unnoticed, that there is no longer Euskaldunes that know only Euskera, with what that means.
It is clear that the strategy that has been proposed for years to address the issue of language has failed, and although it is clear that the (colonial) administrations here could make a more ambitious policy, the problem lies in the framework and the wrong place in which we are moving to analyse the issue of language. In fact, the language totally detached from the conflict in Euskal Herria is usually presented, as if it were not a consequence of it, or as if the solution did not have to come from the same place.
The language is presented as something totally detached from the conflict in Euskal Herria, as if it were not a consequence of it
When we talk about the rights of the Basque Country, Euskal Herria is not singled out as a subject of the language, but as a linguistic community, a concept that is not only erroneous, but also dangerous; because we are not a minority group such as the Poles who live in New York, but a nation, a denied and oppressed nation, which also has that language. It can only be understood in the orbit of thinking that Euskera can be placed outside the problem of its people, in this sense, the qualifier Euskaltzale, used to designate non-nationalists but lovers of Euskera.
Languages are national or not. The "autonomic" languages do not survive, just as the peoples who hold these languages do not survive in the "autonomies", but in the dependence of others. Bilingualism doesn't exist anywhere, and it never really exists, and that's why enemies propose that path, even if it's hypocrisy. The situation of equality between Spanish/French and Basque is a chimera, the balanced coexistence between these languages is a chimera. The fact that Basque politicians feed this idea may be logical, because they have to defend, yes or no, that there is a way to save their political strategy. But the agents of Euskera? Why do they collaborate in this scam of selling the smoke of illusion?
The path of bilingualism is the proposal of a political system that seeks our assimilation, which is not designed to overcome the humiliation and inferiority of the Basques, but based on them. It seems to me very serious to think that, recognizing the legitimacy of the current political situation of Euskal Herria, what the question of the Basque Country needs is nothing more than a political boldness, than to say that with the will everything would be solved. I don't know if it's stupid, but it's unforgivable. And if it's not, even more so.
We do not have time for it, and we are coming to a situation that is not going to turn back. Please play responsibly.
