We opened the zipper of the camping in red and looked through the leek along with Lucy. With this cover, the reader receives the comic book Memet. Simple words scripts and colored pencil illustrations form an original combination. The book we are presenting today was awarded in 2021 with the Bologna Ragazzi Award for Comic Books for 8 to 12 year olds.
Lucy and Roman are known on the campsite. The first has arrived for a few days and the second knows the area very well. Mistrusted at first, softer at the end, the book describes the small encounter between two children. Everyone comes with their backpack (abandonment, need to make friends, brutality, ignorance…) but tenderness wins. To know who Memet is, however, you will have to read the book.
Most cartoons are open (except those simulating video recordings, to show the frame of the camera) and we also find full page images (one from two pages and the other from two pages). I would also highlight the excellent use of the colors that reinforce these open spaces: green, blue, yellowish are the colors of the field, the river and the sun. There are also the interior spaces (caravan, camping, bathroom, car or bar), built with purple blue tones.
The story is located in the summer holiday season and tells the time between the arrival of Lucy and its departure from the campsite. We do not know exactly how many days they are, but apparently there are not many, as the book ends with going to another campsite. The days are bright and long considering the number of pages offered to you. Anyway, the night atmosphere also appears in the book, which despite the darker colors convey security and familiarity.
The curiosity and the play of the protagonists have a lot of space in the book, and that makes the story dynamic, colorful and smells of vacation. At the same time, landscape and spaces are of great importance and we will find illustrations full of details that show us the complexity of relationships and their interconnection. Thus, a really attractive, light, evocative and deep style is configured.
