In the podkweek The diogenes flashlight I have found many ideas to keep thinking about the interview with Miguel Benasayag-eg. Among them, the reflections that human beings make on our relations with technology a.En, dialogue compares the influence of different technologies in the history of human
beings with what digital transformation can have. Mutations in human bodies deriving from different technological changes and their expression in different social models. By acquiring the technology of fire, for example, the human body left most of the work our stomach had to do in the cooking process, and thanks to that surplus energy the brain developed further, we lost the capacity of an organ, but the growth of the brain brought with it opportunities in human societies.
Benasayag says that human beings have the ability to establish relationships with the instruments, to make them the extension of our bodies. We are creative tools adapted to our bodies and needs. But with industrialization this capacity is suppressed by the creation of a machine aimed at feeding capitalism, because the machine linked to capitalism is not an instrument, the machine linked to capitalism conquered certain abilities and began a process of expropriation of the body. In other words, there were no substitutions.
It says that with the digitization model that we have, a similar phenomenon occurs. But now that the conquest of the brain is in danger, that digital machines linked to capitalism have the ability to atrophy our bodies and our brains, and Benasayg talks about diminished brains, brains that avoid complexity and effort in the search for an immediate, binary response. The point is that the transfer of competence linked to digital transformation is present in most areas of life, not only in the productive sphere. If we have colonized brains, brains capable of following processes adapted to the digital machine of capitalism, if we have diminished brains, what social models will we live?
