Snarka Lewis Carroll
Hunting

Translation and Edition of Henry Holiday:Manu LÓpez Gaseni

-------------------------------------------------------
The work we have before us was published in the spring. After the works of Alice in Wonderland, Through the Mirror and Alice for Children, this book by Lewis Carroll closes Alice's cycle. Like the previous one, the Navarre house Pamiela was in charge of bringing to us this year the translation of Manu López Gaseni.
Like the works of the whole cycle, this edition has also been made in Basque for the original edition; in the 1876 edition, on the front cover and back cover and inside we find engravings of Henry Holiday, as well as a poem that appears in the introduction, signed by Carroll himself, dedicated to Gertrude Chataway.
Finally, López Gaseni has offered us an interview in which he has explained the details of the work and the translation into Basque. You can also find a dramatis personae with an image of each character and a brief description of its role in the play.
In this work by Lewis Carroll, the main element is absurdity or nonsense, I would say, above the argument. “A strange crew composed of ten companions has gone to hunt for the fantastic Snark that is supposed to inhabit an island at the end of the seas. The situations on the road are absurd, and hunting and the Snarka itself are chimeric.” This is how the story is summarized in the back cover, and that journey is the story.
Two issues stand out in this work. On the one hand, there is a sense that the reader may have in the face of absurd and absurd events. This is the most difficult work and, at the same time, the highest in Carroll. And, on the other hand, the work done to translate all that into Euskera. The translator has had to rely on cultured, popular poetry and Bertsolarism when translating to Basque, in the elaboration of rimas both traditional and internal, in the game with names and situations. In this way, the original work has been made as similar as possible to the original work in Basque.
This Snarka hunt is written not only by language, but also by the nonsense of the argument, but it is also a task that requires and offers a rich reading. In this sense, it is worth highlighting the effort made by the editorial and the editor to offer the Basque reader the complete cycle of Alicia. These readers are therefore fortunate, as are the Basque culture itself.
