Last year, Miren Agur Meabe published the novel Itzulerak. As the main characters are young people, we could say that it is juvenile literature, but when literature is good, it is for young people and adults, and so it happens with this book.
At first we will follow Estefana and take us from the 16th century to the 21st century, but then we will go in the opposite direction with Katalin. Gontzal, the brother of the second, will try to fade the two phases, elaborating the family genealogy and researching the exchange.
Thus we will know the way of life of Euskal Herria, the material conditions of before and now, the social hierarchies, contrasting beliefs and customs, and we will know Martija Jauregi, a Navarro doctor of origin lekeitio.Martija and
Katalin will try, with the help of medicinal plants, to heal the pains of the body and soul, and therefore, will suffer the persecution of the lords.
We will find Basque mythology, ballads, songs and sayings, as well as closeness to land and nature. The novel begins with Sua, and the flames drag Estefana into the waters of the sea. But the book crosses the wind and puts everything in motion, dancing about the time between life and death.
This is a literary genre poorly worked in Basque literature: travel through time, within fantasy and science fiction, and it is to be welcomed. In addition, we are offered the possibility of appropriating the legacy of the Basque culture in a time without roots. We will delve into history, with the family and the house in the middle.
The characters in this work defend that knowledge and wisdom are not only provided by science, reason and thought, but by instinct, senses, dreams and nature, together with the force of the word, lead and reinvent them.
In the works of Meabe, we tend to have word games, poetic narration and a sensory universe. A moist land that can smell and feel, a saltpetre that swells our hair, strong and sensitive women, gestures of our living culture.
Work is called a turn, because you have to go back to be able to move forward in life. Because on the journey of life through fiction it's nice to have a ticket back and forth to the past and to the future.
