Why be ashamed?
Are we running out of shame? This is the diagnosis of several authors today. Is there no longer a look that can embarrass us? Another thing that Jean-Paul Sartre described in 1943 around shame is that on the other side of the lock, with the eye stuck in the key slot, a person is shocked looking and feeling embarrassed. On the current screens, on the other hand, if the observer is captured, we will receive an invitation to look with him: "Wow! Sit down and watch the video with me!” It is often heard that we live in a pornographic culture in general, what is said to be the key is to show everything transparent, raw and discarded.
No complexes! Living your life. It gives the impression that being ashamed is only a matter for the weak, for the losers. In other times, however, there has been no pejorative view of shame. Today, however, shame has become a social stigma. Can this trend be related to the theme of individualism? How can shame put such limits on our personal freedom?

In school, in the media or in interpersonal relationships, you can hear a lot of psychological advice against shame, in the style of the coach. It lives with indifference, without fearing what others will say, even if what they will say may be reasonable; it does not interrupt their views, however stupid they may be. Let the head and mouth be free. A king should only exist: Me. The most embarrassing thing is to be embarrassed. Feel guilty if you're embarrassed. Because that's the only reason to feel guilty: not enjoying enough of life, of shame.
It may not be so easy to die of shame, all right. Honor is not the current ideal, and I don't think it's the way to reclaim the social value of honor, which was the ancient way of shaming people for reputation. But what has been the neoliberal turn of shame? Do we remove shame and show that we are shamelessly enjoying ourselves as consumers?
Shame is revolutionary: that is the title of a book by Frédéric Gros. Is that speech too moralistic? I wouldn't put it in capital letters, maybe that's too much. But I think that, somehow, coexistence and shame go hand in hand. Shame in the eyes of others can put limits on some of our behaviors and wager on a more dignified way of relating. Maybe it's not so bad that the community causes us a little bit of neighborhood shame. And fortunately, even though we are working hard to heed the new coach, it may not be possible to eradicate the shame altogether.
