"How many are you going to do in Basque in 2075? ". The article just published by Kike Amonarriz in the press has an overwhelming title. Before in Euskal Herria, a question of this kind has been asked in Catalonia. Joan M. The sociolinguistionist Tolosarra awake wanted to share with us the reflections that the book L’ús parlat of Catalan was read in a decisiu tombant (The oral use of Catalan on the decisive curve) of Serra.
Euskaltzalism has always looked enviously at Catalonia. We have not seen here half the force and the drive, either in the citizens or in the institutions, for the benefit of the local language. There, too, the dogs would have barefoot, but in literature and the media, in the administration and in daily activities, the Catalans have been pioneers, referents and road demonstrators in the last decades.
However, concern for the survival of Catalan has increased in recent years. The Cirimoles of Procés have, of course, that pessimism to see. Among other things, the nationalist Catalans defended the new State with imminent independence, because they hoped that the dialect would be finally saved. Their dream has not materialized and, furthermore, it seems that they have been drawn to attention by the ghost of Castellanoparlante, which for so many years has remained hidden in Catalonia. Spanish is heard with pride and pride in the areas where it was formerly used under the mouth.
According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), Euskera is the only official language of the state that is gaining speakers
In this context, I would place Serra’s book on which Amonarriz spoke. According to him, for the first time in history, Catalan has become a minority in its territory. We also know the agents of exhaustion: the lack of persecution or thrust of the states and the different organs of government, the abandonment of the speakers, the sociodemographic changes (decrease in the birth rate and aging of the speakers), the large number of immigrants and the attitude of many young people in favor of Castilian.
Taking all this into account, Serra has presented in his book a look of progress. Look, in today's dynamic, the number of Catalan real speakers would not exceed 25% in 2075, that is, half of the current ones. Only “if appropriate action is taken” would it be possible to maintain the number of actual speakers (40-45 per cent). However, the situation could worsen, becoming a marginal group that remains at 10-15%.
It's a little scary. The percentage that Serra uses as a bridge to Amonarriz to designate the “marginal group” is not far from the current number of real Basque speakers.
So bad are we? I don't know. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), Euskera is the only official language of the state that is gaining speakers, both in the three provinces and in Navarre. The research is last year, but, to know why, it went out of the loop. Maybe our dogs don't walk so barefoot.
