Victoria Woodhull, first candidate
Born 2 April 1970. The newspaper New York Herald published a letter with activist and broker Victoria Woodhull (1838-1927), in which he realized his candidacy for the U.S. presidential elections of 1872. It is the youngest candidate in history, who would be 34 years old on the same election day. Moreover, she was the first woman to elect the presidency of the United States. He was entitled to be a candidate, but not to vote. In the United States, women would get the right to vote half a century later.
She was also the first woman to speak in a committee of the United States Congress in defence of this right. This happened on January 11, 1871. Woodhull said that in order for women to be able to obtain the right to vote, it was not necessary to amend the Constitution or introduce any amendments, as the original text was already included if it was interpreted correctly. He did not persuade the Congressmen, but he did persuade several leaders of the suffragist movement. In addition, Woodhull was a special profile in the suffragettes’ movement; the majority were from the high bourgeoisie and Victoria, on the contrary, came from poverty.
The seventh of the ten siblings mistreated his father, the scammer, and from a young age he forced him to work as a visionary, curandero and preacher, which earned him the ability to speak in public.

After two weddings, several children and countless precarious jobs, at the age of 28, he left for New York with his sister Tennessee Claflin. And that's where he was also a pioneer. Both were the first women brokers on Wall Street and they got immediate success, mostly from the hands of female investors. The money raised was used, among other things, to create the magazine Woodhull and Claflin's Weekly.
He was also an enthusiastic advocate of free love. In November 1871, he proclaimed at the Stainway Hall in New York “I am a free lover!” over 3,000 listeners, between beeps – and few applause. The scandal then added to the mistrust of success on the stock market. And the contents he published in the weekly aroused criticism. In 1972, an article was published against the rebellion Henry Ward Beecher and Beecher denounced them for publishing obscene content. The two sisters were arrested and were in jail for one month. They also spent the election day on lockdown. Woodhull won very few votes.
I would try to reach the presidency twice more. Useless. And the suffragettes also turned their backs on him, “for prioritizing his personal political ambition.” In 1880, in one of the first books about the suffragist movement, despite the long list of activists, they didn't even mention the name Victoria Woodhull.
