The Pozo de Goiatz Labandibarren is a growth novel that takes place one day: the descent of menstruation. Or in other words, a hero's journey, why not.
As often happens in this type of novel, something has happened that changes the known world of Laure, the protagonist to whom the rule has been lowered. Laure is alone at home and when she has realized that she has the bleeding panties, the thought that has passed her head opens the first page: “I will die...” He's afraid to die, to get sick, to be unable to go to the beach. All for the month.
When talking on the phone with her mother, Laura denies that it's a month, because she doesn't want to accept this situation. And he's also embarrassed. Therefore, she asks the mother not to tell her grandmother and father. And she decides not to tell her friends anything. It will be Ania, the eldest sister, that offers you the words of tranquillity.
Laura has the usual feelings the hero feels before he embarks on his journey: fear, rejection and shame.
When it comes to eating, everyone has gathered at home: the mother, the father, Ania, the grandmother and Laure. It is confused, full of contradictions and doubts.
On the hero's journey, the mentor has an important role: to encourage him to travel and accompany him along the way. In this case, Laura will have mentors that can be archetypal from the gaze of menstruation and that represent many moments of the life cycle. The first is Ania, the closest character in the time of the first month. The mother is close to menopause and shares with Laure the fear of losing herself after getting used to living with her menstruation. She is also in a phase of change and understands the situation of her daughter well. Overcome the shame, Laure is encouraged to talk to her grandmother, a character who no longer has blood and has already entered old age.
They have managed to create a state of trust and security among all, which has given Laure the courage to celebrate the first month of competition. His father helps him with logistical issues and has invited his friends to eat pizza and watch a television show. Then, they all began to talk blatantly about the relationship and fear they have with the rule, trusting and gladly. At the end of the day, Laura has more knowledge than when the day begins; and she has been encouraged to celebrate what is uncomfortable and unknown to her.
You will tell me that the book ends when the journey begins, but in this text we can read the journey that the good txiribuelta has given it. Do we celebrate our first month?
