Train stations in many cities show the highest beauty of the 19th century iron structure, along with the rise of arrival at the epicenter of the city. It's like entering the city through the front door, a pearl of architecture and place. However, in many cities, in the phenomena of redensification or restructuring, train stations and railway rails are being buried, as in the center of the city the free land, a place of round construction business operations, is highly appreciated. As a consequence, it is common that the first contact with the city of contemporary travellers takes place in the corners of the subsoil.
The bus is not as glamorous as traveling by train, and perhaps because of that, the architecture of the bus stops has descended into many examples of cities. The Donostia case may be one of the most dramatic. I will get angry: it is a waste space without architectural quality and that does not meet the minimum required by a station. The station has no space to be, it is a step designed as a large corridor. There is not enough space to be waiting to enter the platform, either to stand or to sit. Once on the platform, as there is no space for the bus queue, the queues to Pamplona and Mondragón mix: the chaos of the platform is very common. The station often becomes a space full of people and suitcases where day heat accumulates and polluted air from the bus exhaust pipes has no solution. A garage. An inhumane place, without the hygienic conditions required by the society of the twenty-first century.
Among the tourists who have visited Donostia-San Sebastian, many of them were going to pass through the San Sebastian bus station to catch the bus to the airport. It seems that little thought has been given to this kind of visit or our selective memory is expected to save only idyllic corners. I propose to measure the elegance of a city by the architectural quality of the bus station, as a quality document.
