The report of a Basque cow was published by Bernardo Atxaga in 1991. The book has had a long history and success in both Basque and other languages. One of Germany's best-selling books was J. The British editor Eccleshare considered it a work to be read in the early years in which thousands of Spanish copies were sold... The Mo cow was also very welcome among us; in the first two years 20,000 copies were sold.
Now, on the other hand, it seems that the events of the post-war period of 1936 in the surroundings of the Balanzategui farmhouse do not attract the Basque reader much… although the novel has the strength and value of always. A unique account that combines tragedy and humor, from the point of view of a cow, recounts the dark episode of our people.
Atxaga divided the events of Mo cow into nine chapters, from the beginning of the Balanzategui to the talks with Soeur Pauline Bernardette. Now, on the contrary, Pello Varela has become a graphic novel written by Juan Suárez. There are also some changes in the argument… but when you move from a novel to a graphic novel, the changes
are common, you can’t tell everything the original says!In vivid colors and in dark tones, the biggest weight of the narrative is in the conversations, and the novel’s story is perfectly reflected in the MO book. The reader will soon be immersed in a post-war dwarf where he will gather the discussions that take place within the Mo cow and, above all, will witness the talks he has with La Vache.
On many occasions, it has been commented that the film can awaken the passion for reading the book and that an inverse process can occur. In this sense, it is a joy that this graphic novel has been published. The reader, besides enjoying, opens the way to the novel by the cow Mo to delve into his reflections and events; to feel the intrigue and emotion; to play with the language; and to know the suffering as a consequence of the war and the daily violence… but also to enjoy the humor and the ridiculous exits.
