How much it costs to be Basque
When I learned and started using Euskera, I quickly realized that for the Basques I had become one more of them (being the new Basque vitorian of the last cars, but inside). Among me I thought that Euskal Herria was a beautiful people; etymologically it is a people of Euskera, and the Basque is a people with Euskera. But not only etymologically: when a Basque asks is he Basque? Another person asks, you know Euskera? That is why the people of Euskera have always seemed a very welcoming people: no matter where they come from, if you learn Euskera you are Euskaldun.
State nations are not so welcoming, and there are also languages learned from second immigrant families, even third ones, where generations do not assume themselves as French (because many white Spaniards or French do not take a popular part and because of the racism of the state itself).
I do not believe, therefore, that we are more racist in the Basque world than in the Spanish or French world, nor do I believe that Nerea Fillate regards it. But, from that interview in El Salto, “there are policies that come from the Basque world that are quite racist and exclusionary” and on Twitter, where the law festival began.
There are things we should solve to make it easier for people who are racist and impoverished to pass a passport to the Basque world (learn Basque)
I am interested in the things that are left behind the phrase, and not that this empty phrase covers a deeper debate. And yes, there are things we should solve so that racialized and impoverished people can more easily obtain the passport to the Basque world (learn Basque). To mention two:
One, if in one town there are two schools, and in one of them mainly immigrant families not very rich in money and in the other there are white children of “people”, the distribution is dangerous for the Spanish public free vs Euskaldun “concerted”. (On this subject I always remember Gabriel Aresti, who was against children paying a fee for studying in Basque at the Francoist time.)
Two, if adults have to pay the Euskaltegi for studying Euskera (although under certain conditions this money is then returned, etc. ), you may wonder why Spanish or French are absolutely devalued and Basque is not.
If we Basques do not fight for universality and gratuity, and “recognize” that things “are like this” (2024! ), we run the risk of linking Euskera (Basque Country) to a quota that is not worth it.
