Standardisation of corruption
EUR 904 billion. This is the annual cost of corruption in the European Union, according to a study carried out in 2020. Between 2008 and 2020, 3,743 cases of corruption were published in the media, of which 109 corresponded to Hego Euskal Herria. Of course, we will find more retrospective cases, including the Bravo case, which has just completed its judicial career. During a legislature with the PNV senator and for many years leading the Gipuzkoan Treasury, Victor Bravo was tried for stealing €1.9 million and causing a loss of eight million in the treasury. But it will have to lengthen the lawsuit too long and deliver half the penalty.
This is also an instrument for political noise between parties, rather than focusing the debate on the economic loss that corruption affects citizens and changing the root of this structural political problem.
It will avoid jail and, for my part, no problem. This as a citizen does not affect my rights. However, it makes me lose a direct penalty for losses to public funding. It is incomprehensible that the political and institutional leaders of Gipuzkoa are unaware of this black hole that was widening year after year, but above all it would be impossible for such systematic theft to be committed if the system did not allow it. If the theft of EUR 904 billion a year in Europe is so accepted, it is because the system is seen as a cost of “your way”.
Corruption follows “its path”. In addition to the existing facilities for allocating public money to private companies in the name of public-private partnership, those who take the opportunity to enrich us steal millions each year. And it's happened again with Koldo auzia. But this is also an instrument for political noise between parties, rather than focusing the debate on the economic loss that corruption causes to citizens, and radically changing this structural political problem. We have not heard it these days and that is because there are more effective measures, but the habit of silence between some parties is old. It would be bad news to add more parties to this political game.
