Maddi Goikoetxea had a hypothesis before starting the investigation: “While the theatre has no social prestige, it is doomed to precariousness.” So he interviewed thirteen agents from the Basque theatre world and collected the result in Ura jan.

Although in each section the interviewers focus on the same theme, each interviewee and interviewee will give light and shade different from their knowledge and experience. However, everyone will share experiences, intentions and concerns.
One of them is the importance and invisibility of the creative process. The theatre is not sufficiently known and therefore valued. Therefore, creators must be constantly explaining, justifying and demanding the process of their work and the resources it requires. Working conditions are very precarious and depend on subsidies, negotiating with municipalities and cultural programmers.
Another shared concern is the difficulty of working only in Basque. On the one hand, in Ipar Euskal Herria they have the Artist Statute and the dramaturgs have better economic conditions than in Hego Euskal Herria, but since the Basque is not official when working in Euskera, they have added difficulties.
Community and transmission are two concepts here and there. On the one hand, theatre (and art or culture in general) is a way to cultivate the language and to build the people, and in this connection they defend the presence of a theater group living in each village. On the other hand, they defend a presence of quality in education to know the theater and create audience.
It is a good job to discover who the “ekilibrists” and “people’s orchestras” are and how they live in today’s Basque theatre: to become aware of what happens before and after climbing up and down the curtain and to feel a little closer to the Basque performing arts.
