Protecting a language is a political decision, as much as censoring or reducing a language." These are the explanatory words made by the Spanish President, Pedro Sánchez, also president of the Socialist Party, in September, amid the controversy raised by the socialist defense of the possibility of using Euskera (and other official languages of the State) in the Spanish Congress.
Sánchez spoke very well, but as far as the Basques are concerned, the practice of his party for years is at the other end, so as not to rely on those words. The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party has practised the exclusion of the Basques in Navarre and has expressed its willingness to continue on this. In the CAV, the rights of the Basques and the legal protection of the Basque Country have been hindered, and there are still many examples. The PSE and the PSN, a branch of the PSOE, did not want to take responsibility for a social transformation that pursues the equality of linguistic rights; they did not want to go before educating society in respect of minority languages, in the equality of the rights of speakers. They have even obstructed any measure that would guarantee the linguistic rights of the Basques, and they have been proud of it. There have been few periods of exposure of aggressive, anti-Euskaldunes and very Spanish attitudes. In a way, they have wanted to appear as a barrier to the recovery of the Basque country against reactionary sectors that accuse them of not being sufficiently Spanish.
It is up to the Basques to make the political decision to protect our language and live in Basque.
In any case, these neo-Nazi sectors have beaten and passed them, rejecting the languages of some territories of the Spanish State (Baleares, Aragón…) and re-establishing Spanish rule. Consequently, PSN and PSE now appear in the same glotophobic sac of Vox and PP. We do not believe, however, that this has been too concerned with the franchises of Sánchez, that they do not promote models of immersion in Basque in the Law of Education of the CAV, nor that they disqualify from the Law of the Basque Country of Navarra so that they do not equip them.
That is why the ball is on the heads of nationalists, if it is no longer there, at least as far as the Basque country is concerned. Be disobedient to anti-Euskaldunes rulings, or based on the general collective practice of living in Euskera, or by consensus and implementing independent linguistic policies, or better by making them together, but it is up to the Basques to make the political decision to protect our language and live in Euskera.
