With the Igartza prize, this book is the first published by Olatz Mitxelena. Ten stories make up the material A fish bone in the throat; a suggestive title and an attractive cover welcome and the reader will find a box full of surprises on its pages.
Words that remain unspoken in the throat, thoughts that get stuck without going into the mouth, silences, lack of communication and misunderstandings condition relationships, modify, break and make them uncomfortable. However, in each story, the author uses a different strategy to show the gap between the characters:
On the one hand, the author introduces us to the inner world of characters. What the characters think and feel is far from what they say and do. So even though the reader has all the information, we'll see how the emotional, physical abyss happens between the characters. An example of this are stories The paper bodies, I owe it or Botanika ikastaroa.
On the other hand, the author presents suffocating situations to set this misunderstanding among the characters. In the stories Fog or Katuka we find the words physical pain, vomiting, bad smell, corrupt. They mix disgust and discomfort. And in the story Successions, there is also the disgust and unease that a smile causes in the character.
What happens inside bodies is contradictory to what they do outside. The use of the author's fantasy in some of them blurs the boundaries between truth and lie. And they also have the ability to question whether what they've told has actually happened.
Some reports provoke surprises, anguish, drowsiness, anger, distress. There are also those who laugh, as the author often uses a fine irony. There is no story that makes me warm. And I've really enjoyed what the words tell me, all those who don't say have suggested to me, the power of the images they choose. It has taken ties and games very well and I think it's a very round book. We hope, Olatz!
