Queen Kong
Helene Vignal
Translation: See Agur Meabe

--------------------------------------
Helene Vignal is the author of this short and intense text. Author of the juvenile literature, and with this book received numerous awards and received the prestigious Pepite d´or prize in 2021. Miren Agur Meabe has translated the text with the editorial Elkar. He has used a cult and rich Basque, care. And at the same time selecting words and sounds that fit very well into the rhythm, tone and content of the text.
The book is short. It's about 70 leaves. Several issues. Sexuality is a claim to discover and enjoy personal freedom and pleasure. Society in general denounces the double standards it uses to punish women who choose at the same time. And specifically, lynching from social media. Finally, it questions the pressure that the sex group can exert during adolescence.
The title of the book can bring to mind Virgine Despentes's King Cong theory and the belief that it is a gesture when reading the book gains strength. The protagonist has been used to playing with himself for eight years, to playing his part, to masturbating and to organizing. However, during adolescence she wants to share sex with others and try to increase the pleasure she feels with herself. It is clear that he does not want to confuse sex and love. And on these pages he tells us his experiences with four boys. The situations experienced with each are multiple and as a reader we will make an emotional journey: we can feel indifference, tenderness, eroticity, anger, empathy...
This first person text has caught me from the start. The epic and strong tone has ignited the flame inside me and to achieve it has used straight phrases and round statements showing the security of the protagonist in himself. Gets the erotic and sensual tone with words, verbs. Very short sentences. Mixing conversation and text. It reads almost at pulse. It creates a rabid tone with lots of negative phrases and rhetorical questions. It also has a mysterious aspect: What exactly has happened? What do you talk about when you say? Although it can be suspected from the very beginning, intrigue can also catch the reader. In short, the author has achieved an emotional, provocative, fresh, explicit text. Ideal for adolescents and adults.
