Aliens and disaster tourism
We have left behind the summer months and this year also discussed the news related to adverse weather events that mark the climate emergency and its consequences. We have heard, among other things, about the increases in temperature in the oceans and seas, the fires that have spread in the Mediterranean, the new record temperatures, crop losses, droughts and floods.
In this context, several tourists approach the Death Valley in Southeast California. They've photographed the thermometer coming out of cars with air conditioning and marking 55 degrees Celsius. So they immortalize the moment of living the highest temperature in history on planet Earth. And all of this, in the United States, is at the center of unprecedented highest lead. In the context of the eco-social crisis we are experiencing, the phenomenon mentioned fulfills all the requirements to be considered catastrophe tourism.
On the other hand, news related to aliens has also been flying this summer. Former American military, before the country’s congress, say the government hides alien ships and biological traces.
Unlike science fiction, the reality is that here soon there will not be what to conquer and steal aliens, because we are all on the way to exhaustion.
Although the starting point has nothing to do with this, the joint work on both issues allows us to reflect on the eco-social crisis. We started thinking about the case and asked ourselves the following question: What will aliens come to planet Earth? According to science fiction and popular culture, aliens come to conquer the Earth. But what do they have here to conquer? Could you come to do space mining? Unlike science fiction, the reality is that there will soon be nothing to conquer and what to steal, because we are all on the way to exhaustion. Furthermore, who would like to conquer an increasingly inert planet?
So by hypothesizing, we might think that aliens might belong to a space travel agency that has come to know the tourist destination of the future.
It is clear that on planet Earth, following the logic of savage capitalism, we will have every chance that space beings can practise catastrophe tourism here. Because we have known for some time that this economic and political system that does not put lives at the centre leads to barbarism. If we do not want the most alien tourists, we will have to organise ourselves – because we are still in time – to fight, debate, create and build together a place that is not of interest to the devastators.
