Prisoners in handkerchief
One of the media debates was the presence in the campaign of the municipal elections in Hego Euskal Herria of ex-inmates with blood crimes on various lists and the subsequent regression of these friends.
Perhaps with this movement EH Bildu won several votes, and in a broader way, I am sure he had won in the eyes of some citizens what he was looking for: Show empathy with ETA victims, the remoteness from armed struggle and the difference between the independence left of yesterday and today. It is clear that if one day EH Bildu is going to win political hegemony in the elections, he has to delve into the three previous objectives.
Another thing is how far and how the independence left is “normalized” in this issue (and in others) and how far the day of victory has changed (elections). At some point, to access the management of the police, education, health, the media and public chiringuitos, the margin for change or minor modifications. In other words, if today you sow melons tomorrow you will receive melons.
That is why, beyond electoral competition, we should speak before or next to prison, for example (and other issues). Because, does the possibility that people who have been imprisoned may be eligible (or intervener) have turned back?
I have always thought that school children, in addition to museums, excursions, etc., should be brought to know landfills and prisons.
Prisons are a place designed for the punishment and destruction of people, where people are humiliated with authoritarianism, violence, legal and illegal drugs, servitude, labor exploitation, etc. Everything apart from the eyes of society. Even if he leaves prison, everything is a bureaucratic obstacle and lack of support, in the absence of a strong family and friendly environment, the former convict is the last major obstacle to so-called “reintegration”.
If the punishment is fulfilled, any former Presidio has the right to join work, to do sport, to go to the theatre, to militate in a political party or to stand for election. Now, with this precedent of not being elected, a right that was legally recognized by ex-prisoners, in short, that had “blood crimes”, has been removed.
When does the penalty end? Do we believe in the right of a person who has served in prison to start a new life? Do we believe in “reintegration”? Why don't we let society solve that person's suitability with their vote or their lack of vote?
I have always thought that school children, in addition to museums, excursions, etc., should be brought to know landfills and prisons. For one more reason, now.
