To enjoy with Xola
Xola's first work was published in Basque in 1995, and Xola knows the lions. Since then, Erein has published four other books (there is another one published by Gara in 2000), all written by Atxaga and illustrated by Mikel Valverde. I am convinced, in this sense, that this cunning and peculiar dog is known to many of
our readers. But if someone doesn’t know who Xola is, we would say that Xola is an adventurous dog, but also philosopher, brave, pragmatic, cultured, milky, dreamer… That is, he is a dog that moves the feelings and sensations of anyone.
There are twenty years from the first Xola, who believed he was a lion, to the last, who knows how to make the most of the situation of a very pragmatic and fearful dog that we can find in the work Xola and the thief.
Because that's a feature of Xola, who always knows how to take his practical side beyond self-discussions, with a point of humor. In this respect, the talks between Mr Xola and Mr Grogo are very important, or the images of Valverde with transtextual information and message transmission to the reader.
Atxaga writes for children, but without giving up literature, Xola speaks to her heart and mind, Angelito expresses her personality through action and language, Xola receives medals when she tramples over the thief, but it is chocolate, which are the ones that interest the dog... Atxaga uses irony, plays with language, philosopher of life, but above all it attracts the reader to the morsel.
The adventures of Xola have received many awards, the second work, Xola and the wild boar, earned the Euskadi Prize, and the translation has been recognized as one of the best children's works in the world in Japan. Proof of this award and success are the praise of the external media and experts appearing in the book's back cover (none here). The edition we have in our hands (similar to the one that has been made in English or Japanese), will it serve to read the adventures of Xola again to enjoy with it!
