We relate progress to improvement. We can improve, improve many things: our happiness, our health, power, knowledge... Not all improvements are easily objectivable, nor once objectified can measures be obtained, and of course, what cannot be measured cannot be compared, which cannot be compared as an improvement? So when it comes to improving the world we're in, we're developing just looking at objectivable variables, neglecting everything else, minimizing, discarding. Two variables have been very successful in this way to target improvement: economic cost and economic benefit. I suspect that the world we have has taken shape around these two variables, perhaps because of the limited reality I live in.
The objectification of economic cost and economic performance has accompanied mathematics and throughout history we have created numerous technologies to facilitate accounts: numbers, abacus, idea of money, paper and account books, accounting systems, Excel sheets, CRM, ERPs, artificial intelligences...
The dynamics of quantifying economic costs and benefits are rigorous and the results are clear about who and what is used to "improve" and who and what is not. We have to take everything to that model: the struggles of peoples, the protection of animals, the education of children... If there is no improvement in the quantification of economic costs and benefits, it seems that nothing mejora.Aunque quantification has
been useful for many things, it must be clear that it has a dark side and has been a tool to promote exclusion in our world.
This model is so wrong that we have quantified exclusion in the quantified world that we have today, and of course we want to reduce situations of exclusion. But what do we mean by improving the lives of people in situations of exclusion? To adapt to the logic of this quantified world? Is this the only way to reduce exclusion? Along the way, I think we're losing something.
