This week the echo of some debates on automatic dubbing has come to my ears. It seems that there are certain artificial intelligences that are on the way to achieving a high level of dubbing, comparable to human beings, and that can perform dubbing work in real time.
The threat of job losses that digitization has already posed to many professions in the last twenty years, this technology leads to the public actors. The professionals working in the dubbing consider that their work possibilities will decrease as the possibility of translating into any language is developed using original voices with artificial intelligence in a more economical way. If we reached this, for example, we could hear Cate Blanchett in Euskera “in his voice,” in any film that is automatically folded. That is why a number of trade unions have raised their voices, calling for them to look at what is to come and to reflect on regulation.
But what if all this was an opportunity more than a threat? If it were an opportunity for minority languages? How far will this technology go? Will there be a button on video and streaming platforms for instant machine translation in any language? Would this be beneficial for minority languages?... In principle, yes, but thinking, if with automated translation we could consume all the contents of the world in our language, why create it in a minority language? What culture would cultural transmission be? Would they homogenize the conceptions of the world even if they were several languages? Would it be beneficial? Despite the persistence of languages, would cultures be on the verge of extinction?
