Dissected
Bar Gloria is the first novel he has created individually with the group of the collective Ibarzabal Txakur Gorria.
A dissected ox head hanging over the door of Bar Gloria welcomes the reader. The pattern of the universe created by Ibarzabal, the aesthetic that has been outdated and the representation of the traditional world is also the head of anamalia that has conquered dust and fat.
The book is a description and criticism of the hostile environment created by the lack of communication between the characters and the violence of hegemonic masculinity. Bar Gloria is ruled by the Lopetegi family. Ana and Rachel, sisters, work on the bar with Miguel, almost from home, and Bizenta, her mother, kitchen. On Sundays other family members collaborate in the business. From the beginning there is a great difficulty to express her feelings: Ana does not tell Rakel her intention to leave the village, Raquel does not tell Ana about the fear she gives to go, Miguel is not able to talk to Vicente about the attack she has suffered, Vicente prefers to get into the kitchen rather than throwing Elias out of the bar, Patxi receives the silence of hard men and is a universe. The characters are dissected like ox's head, filled with dust and fat.
Gloria bar is the central space of the book. It's the place where most characters come together and spend the most time. The walls of the bar and the ox's head, in addition, come and hear everything the characters silence, highlighting that heavy environment.
Ibarzabal takes advantage of time in an interesting way, jumping continuously back and creating a lot of ellipsis imitating the modus operandi of the characters.
In general, I have read the book with satisfaction. Perhaps I have noticed that it has too many loose threads, and I think some of the narrative threads that have kept me in tension have remained unrounded. However, Ibarzabal has shown a great ability to create an environment and a great ability to do in his own style the complexity of the world he has told. The author finds wood to roast himself.
