How and when did it start with fabrics?

At the time when I met the textile world, I was a professor at public school. It was a very difficult course for me. On the one hand, because I had work, but on the other, because I loved what I was discovering. And I realized that, although for society I had "everything" -- I mean fixed work -- that wasn't enough for me, that didn't work for me.

I already knew Koldo Arakistain, but that's when I started doing a double acrobatics with him. We connected it well, we were both very comfortable. We were doing magic. From one day to the next he told me about our Circus and encouraged me to do something together. So we did. I immediately realized that that was what I wanted and that I had to go around at all costs. I didn't want the spine of repentance in me. I didn't want to spend the year and look back with sorrow. Then I started my own path, Our Circus was the springboard for it.

And why the cloths?

When you speak with fabrics, you're in front. I am not against fabrics, but with fabrics. My head is blank, very focused
on what I'm doing. I forget everything. In addition, the path of studies or creation is infinite. I'm not totally self-taught, I also have people who help me develop, and that also enriches me. The cloth is very aesthetic, thin, elegant, but also very hard. It takes a lot of strength, flexibility and you have to like to suffer. He smokes. Like a cooking oil burn. Confronting it becomes a motivation for me, and that moment in which I find a pleasure point to pain is immense.

That “everything”, “everything” is not the same for everyone.

That stability I had in formal education was not for me all. I had to make a choice. I had nothing clear about it, but I liked it so much and I felt so well and so full with the circus experience… I had to make a bet: listen interiors and move forward.

The Berdinki company is born with the need to have something more through the circus. Beyond spectacular practice, there is also a tool to transform the imaginary. We wanted to address the imaginary, and we have the illusion of building it and impregnating it in equality and in Basque. First we created the company Berdinki, after presenting us to the call “Karrikan”, which promotes the creation on the street, and then we started to create the spectacular “Mikra”. In it, we put power relations and gender roles at the center. We started in September 2020 and have carried out 60 performances.

On the one hand, and on the other, the Circuola.

As soon as I was born, there was a health epidemic, and there I felt everything upside down. I thought I was in time to go back, but we kept it and less badly. And in the Circus we find everything, in Aduna. We took the step to use our space for training and creation as a taught circus. In addition to creating, we wanted to teach, and so we created the first Basque and feminist circus school in Gipuzkoa. We attach great importance to it being addressed in Basque. In short, it is very important to have positive experiences in our mother tongue, and there is still a great gap in Basque Country. Because it's not possible to do the official circus career here in our language, and therefore for those who have that passion, there's also a way to create a quarry. We are looking forward to offering you what we did not have.

Did you realize what you did?

In our simplicity we do realize. It was essential for us to speak in Basque. When we're creating, we're talking to ourselves. And when you work with yourself, you speak in your mother tongue. We wanted to give that opportunity to the children. In Bizkaia there are circus schools, but they do not give such importance to language.

The circus, which began from personal need, has become a huge space. We have about 180 permanent students, who come every week, and many other courses, weekdays or weekends. Once a month, for example, we offer the family circus. Children and parents have fun doing these exercises together. We live very nice times and are very grateful to the community that has emerged in the Circus.

What can the circus bring?

The circus can be a very integral tool to orient inwards. To know their own capacities to break the supposed limits. In addition, the circus can be performed by anyone. Children and adults, both high and low. Many values can be worked out, staff developed and all without competition. In the circus there is nothing wrong, everything is well done. This is not black or white, but I like it or not. I therefore use these lines to encourage anyone to know the Circus and participate in organized courses and activities.
