On the 37th anniversary of Mikel Zabraise's assassination, I read the phrase: "Memory is an unabandoned factory." I immediately felt employed by the memory factory against torture, struggling to do and see pieces that some want to forget. Without organization, somehow each in its own way and without much help. Meanwhile, dozens of other factories trying to impose their memory, and our unions? In the negotiations?
As a factory worker, I've had the feeling of being more than once. The last one, about the documentary Bi arnasa. In other words, the workers (the tortured) and our group of friends try to keep the factory together, but the unions (the political movement) are not with us in this struggle, or this is limited to office tasks. How can we understand that this year, in 2022, Iratxe Sorzabal is sentenced to 24 years in prison on the basis of torture claims, and that the allegations made against her come from her family and friend? Or that many Basque political prisoners remain in prison for the same reason and do not strike or wreak more havoc on the street? Have the unions signed an agreement on amnesia, on silence, in the name of coexistence? It is time to go beyond the courts and offices, to remember, not to happen again, to confess and to suspend the sentences of the prisoners, to strike!
Despite the systematic and structural torture suffered by Basque citizenship, the response to it has not been so, I believe that the denunciation and the fight against torture has been left to the people. Torture is coming out of the shadow of dungeons to the streets according to the tools we have the tortured individuals, which is a great effort for the survivors. And that is, giving testimonies means making visible those bodies that raped and destroyed, open wounds. Politicize that reconverted body back into a battlefield to craft a collective memory. To the extent that the State is victims of terrorism and experienced, we have full legitimacy to point the finger at those responsible. But to achieve political recognition we need social and political movements with us!
Despite the systematic and structural torture suffered by the Basques, the response to it has not been so. I trust to delegate
At the moment it seems to me essential to assume political responsibility in the name of memory. On the one hand, because the fight against torture cannot be limited and delegated to the institutions. It seems to some that, in what they call the Vascongadas, with the presentation of our name in the report of the Basque Government we have remembered. That is why, as in Navarre, I believe it is necessary for these torturers to enter, organize and become active political subjects in the way of memory and recognition. To ensure that there is no repetition, we must cite and note what has happened.
Starting from that need, with the documentary Bi Arnasa we are making pickets, trying to turn on other factories and workers and unlock the unions. Because the issue of torture is not of the past, but the state violence that continues to leave terrible consequences. Memory is made from claim and not oblivion. We have testified to the specific violence suffered as Basque women, to incorporate them in the collective reading of the conflict. That is our contribution. Now it's your turn. For two thousand breaths to be turned against the impunity of torturers and torturers and for the recognition and collective feminist memory!
