Economist and professor Jeffrey Sachs became famous after the fall of the Berlin Wall as an advisor to the transition from the economies of real socialism to capitalism in Poland and Russia. He has subsequently worked in the areas of sustainable development, macroeconomics and the fight against poverty as Director of the Columbia University The Earth Institute between 2002 and 2016.

Sachs recently spoke at the Athens Democracy Forum, until it was silenced by rigorously defining the American political system: "The United States is a semi-democratic, hierarchical and racist society, dominated by whites, that wants to maintain the privileges of the elites. So it was formed in 1787, it was a genocidal and slave country, killing Native Americans to have white culture, but surprisingly it remains so, even though we are far more different than we were now."

Moderate ideological competition and democratic stability in the United States have often been praised. This has been possible, inter alia, by the exclusion from the electoral system of certain excluded social sectors, especially the poor, immigrants and African-Americans. That is why politicians are much more homogeneous, white and moderate than social reality. Because EE.UU. has not complied with the minima of a liberal democracy to a greater or lesser degree. There is a broad consensus in the Science of Politics, we could sum it up in three elements: a person must have the right to vote and be a candidate and competition must be, more or less, equal opportunities.

But in the United States, the right to vote is not guaranteed. Sometimes it approaches that ideal and others move away. Each State freely regulates the roles and conditions it will request from the person wishing to register as a voter. On the other hand, although all those formally registered have the possibility of running for the elections, in practice this is very difficult for those who are not wealthy or for those who do not have the protection of the rich. In the mid-term election of the President of 2022, the sum of the millionaires to both sides has been the highest of all times and 1% of donors have contributed 38% of the total granted. So there is no doubt that among the representatives of the elected Congress the lucky ones will have many friends.

If we look at the results, the Democrats have kept it much better than they expected, the House of Representatives may be in the hands of the Republicans, but with a not very large majority. This is important because Joe Biden's government will be able to vote for his bills by negotiating with some Republican representatives. Moreover, in the Senate the majority will be democratic. That's why the shores are intertwined among Republicans, because the red wave that the polls announced has not come, and no wonder, Trump provokes a big reproach among ethnic minorities and in some key states, where competition is close and where abortion rights are questioned, there has been a significant mobilization of women against Republicans. Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Republicans have put Ron DeSantis, the least noisy governor of Florida, on the far right, doing warming exercises.
