"I'd like a boy without a man."
The Epigram collection is the 1920 book Pensées d’une Amazone by American writer Natalie Clifford Barney. The thoughts he accumulates are many and diverse. The book starts with over 50 offers and Barney tells the reader to choose his. This can be done with the epigrams that come next, many loose thoughts, some contradictory among them, but it points to a feminist and pacifist awareness – typical – of the early twentieth century.
The first chapter of this book talks about the roles that women are assigned, among others, war and heterosexual and homosexual love. One of the epigrams says: “Let all those people who are washed by fire approach our houses alone: we will be better than a man’s wife, mother or sister, we will be the man’s female brother.”
To this book, to this phrase, responds the long letter Jan female brother of Marina Tsvetaieva, subtitled Carta amazonari. Barney responds especially to the words of lesbian relationship and maternity. There are many, like this, texts written by Tsvetaieva to other writers. It was related to numerous poets of his time and it seems that, from what he says at the beginning of the text, he also met Barney. During the Russian Revolution, Tsvetaieva was exiled in Paris from 1925 to 1939 for whites. Barney’s life in Paris was different from that of Tsvetaieva, an exiled isolated and poor Russian policy, who made famous literary salons in the Temple of Friendship on Jacob Street.
He was a poet poet, Tsvetaieva, but he found resignation and exclusion time and time again: literally, he found no place in the literary, political and social environments, because they saw it with distrust. Later, his work has been better known and in Basque, at the moment, we can also read his final poem, in the translation of Josu Landa.
My female brother is among the autobiographical texts written in prose. When Tsvetaieva died in 1933, he passionately loved the poet Sofia Parno, the words drink from that pain, the new wound of scars left by the relationship and the death of his former lover. She takes advantage of the experience in this relationship to reflect on the Lesbian relations and motherhood.
It says in the book that the desire to have a child makes the relationship impossible, it is the “child” that Barney mentions many times in his epigrams but does not care, the emptiness that Tsvetaieva has caused in his words and that produces so much pain: “I understand Safo when I see a wilting sauce.”
