A colleague told me about a SPRI workshop: “Anticipate your energy consumption: How can artificial intelligence help you save energy?” The war in Ukraine increases energy. In this sense, the workshop proposes that artificial intelligence (AI) can be a saving tool. We realized that this “saving” was an investment. You have to power an AA with data to learn how and when we use electricity to make savings decisions. Therefore, the first contradiction of this saving is that our analogue systems at home/company are not valid and we will have to put in a digital system.
Developers may tell us that current investment has long-term advantages: in the long term investment will be depreciated by energy savings. Maybe yes. But, of course, we will lose the privacy of our behaviors towards the energy consumption of our company/home. A system that makes “better decisions” that we lead in part to losing our awareness of our consumption process. In this complex world that we have built, the need for help from an AA that manages better than us will increase.
With all this, we can see as a benefit the implementation of AA to increase savings, but let us not forget that what puts the price of energy will never be us. Therefore, we must take special care in these AA guided systems, where and to whom the accumulation of our data will depend. If our consumption behaviour is known to the company that puts the price of energy, it will be able to fight our savings.
