There is a prize that pays tribute to the work of the young Basque architects: Peña Ganchegui Award. Like other awards that architects grant to architects, they legalize a way of understanding and doing architecture, and they are often able to describe ancient architecture. And like the other awards, it could open a door to a new job, be a stimulus to keep working, give prestige, make a speaker, feed the exaggerated of the winners, be a subsidy and always decorate the curriculum well. The place where the prize is awarded, from the moment it is the place of opinion in favour of someone, will always be an area of power.
The Peña Ganchegui Prize has defined as “Basque” the location of the architecture office in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country or obtaining the title of architect in our territory. And the category “young”, that the title has been acquired since 2011, that is, that collective or individual works are works of the last ten years. The young Basque architect presents himself as a candidate for this prize and pays 20 euros. The winner gets 6,000 euros. These conditions define the coordinates of the architecture profession well. The prize aims to highlight a trajectory and fulfill the work of influencer, identifying a group of booming Basque architects. The winner of the last year has been Ocamica-tudanca architects.
And what is the life of the award-winning to be able to make the award-winning journey? What facilities and support have you had? To maintain an excellent architecture for years, what effort does it involve and what economic situation does it support? What handicap does it have for the architect to be young? Could the experience of the award-winning, along with the purplish suit, serve to pool the lights and shadows of the collective and bring the debate to the table? Could the prize, in addition to taking care of individual success, serve to publish more uncomfortable aspects of the profession?
